The Three sacred mountains of Dewa
Shonai is located northwestern coast of Japan, surrounded by the three sacred mountains: Mt. Haguro, Mt. Gassan and Mt. Yudono (Dewa Sanzan).

The Dewa Sanzan are popular pilgrimage sites within Japan, priding themselves for the oldest known history of mountain worship.

Mt. Haguro
(414m) is known for its 1000 year-old Gojū-no-tō pagoda (left) and Sanzan Gosai-den temple compound (below).

These structures are listed as Special Places of Scenic Beauty, Special Historic Sites and Special Natural Monuments by the Japanese government’s Agency for Cultural Affairs.

The Four Seasons in Northern Japan
Due to its temperate climate, the northern part of Japan experiences clear seasonal changes and many tourists come to appreciate its beauty.

In Spring, one can enjoy the festival of viewing cherry blossoms in full bloom (Hanami). In Summer, mountains are covered with lush vegetations and plains by rice paddies forming a green velvet carpet all over the countryside. Crimson red and yellow leaves covers valleys and mountains while snow tops the highest peaks in Autumn. Beutiful snow falls cover mountains in Winter, the winter-sports season sets in, and ski resorts and hot spring spas become crowded with visitors.
